First day in Cape Town

Just returned from a conference in Cape Town. Here are some short stories:
The sunday - first day of the IGARSS conference brought the highest rains in 52 years! This was amazing for coming climatologists, but not the best for getting to know the city before the conference time starts. What else can one do than to start tasting the delicious food with local Castle.

South Africa cloud impression

Some comments on the picture from my friend Praveen - the climatologist: mainly it is stratocumulus and as being observed from the top, there are gaps as well between the clouds and some lower cumulus clouds are also seen...so this might be perlucidus clouds...

I know its a cloudy description, but this is how the situation becomes when clouds are there...the situation becomes cloudy and hence the description !! ;-)

Sunset under the Table mountain

Could you beleive that this piese of rock is more than 600 million years old. That makes it one of the oldest rocks on the world!

Table mountain is consisted mostly of sandstone and granite. Magma intruded to the shell 600 millions year and formed todays hard inner granite core of the mountain.

Since than the mountain experienced variety of destinies such as sedimentation, flattening by ice sheets (that's what give the mountain the "table" look), shifting of tectonic plates. It was the hard core of the mountain that allowed for the rise of the mountain during the plates shifting 280 milion years ago.

The upper sandstone layer gets worn by winds and water causing extraordinary appearance. The southern cliffs were written by the action of waves. The hard granite base of the mountain reminds unchanged.

This pictures were taken on the way down from our 1 day hike on Table mountain. We started at the university around 9, let our friend from the university show us the way around the hill and then just ascended straight up. It took us all around 4 hours with lot of stops for pictures, the ascend itself around 2 hours.

Once you approach Table mountain you get mesmerized by the flatness of this place. Many years of ice sheets formed a large never ending table where you can walk for hours. The light could not be better on the way back. the play of shadows allowed all that day's visitors to get very cool shots.

How Flat can Table Mountain get

This is on the top of the table mountain. You can walk on the top for hours and enjoy the views. The features on the picture remind me of some typical effects of river whirls. This landscape was however mostly shaped by glacier. What are these features?

Summer 2009 impressions

"Na Okor je cesta jako zadna ze sta, roubena je stromama..". These are the lines you may start to whistle while traveling in this part of the Czech republic. Velke Prilepy, Okor, Cerny VUl, Unetice.. Small and warm towns not far away from Prague. Biking in these fields is amazingly colorful these days.

These pictures were taken by a SAMSUNG W500, auto setting, micro mode.
